Start small.  We recommend you start with a mat.  Yes, a simple mat will help you get started with your exercises, avoiding potentially painful back injuries.  You may also want to get a small set of barbells, a jump rope, and when you're ready to move on to bigger, and better things, you can start looking at professional bodybuilding equipment.
Remember that most of what's currently advertised on TV is geared towards the fitness set, so it may not be the right choice when your
goal is to build highly defined muscles.
